MMI Equipment News 2009

Equipment Outages/Information

MMI is currently experiencing some equipment outages and issues due to laser problems.  We endeavour to provide continued access to all instrumentation and are working hard to minimise any interruption to users.  Whilst we are commissioning a number of our new exciting instruments, we will be decommissioning the Leica Argon Microscope.  Please use the below links for further information.

Information for users of Nikon C1 Microscopes

Users of the C1 microscopes should save their images in Jpeg2000 for single images and nd2 for z and time series. These formats can be opened and edited in Image J with the appropriate plugins. Image J  with all available plugins can be downloaded from the site below

New Arrivals!

MMI has now received 4 of the 5 new microscopes which are currently being commissioned.  Information related to the new microscopes specifications, their current status and training is outlined below.

Nikon C1 Upright Microscope

Nikon C1 Inverted Microscope

Nikon Abrio Polerisation Microscope

Leica SP5 5 Channel Microscope

Olympus Cell^R Microscope

Nikon C1 Upright Microscope

Currently being commissioned and available for training

Calcium Calendar Name: MMI_NikonC1_Upright

This system features 3 channel fluorescence imaging plus transmitted light, 4 excitation lasers (405 nm, 488 nm, 561 nm, 635 nm laser lines). Good range of objectives including dipping objectives.

Nikon C1 Inverted Microscope

Currently being commissioned and available for training

Calcium Calendar Name: MMI_NikonC1_Inverted

3 channel fluorescence imaging plus transmitted light, 4 excitation lasers (405 nm, 488 nm, 561 nm, 635 nm). Good range of objectives. Incubator and CO2 (NOT YET AVAILABLE) for live cell imaging. There is an identical instrument at MIMR.

Nikon Abrio Polerisation Microscope

Currently being commissioned

Calcium Calendar Name: MMI_Nikon_Abrio

The Abrio polarisation widefield microscope is used for fluorescence and quantitative polarisation microscopy. It has a CCD camera for brightfield and an Abrio camera for polarisation work. An atmospheric chamber (37Deg and soon CO2) is fitted for live cell work.

Leica SP5 5 Channel Microscope

Currently being commissioned

Calcium Calendar Name: MMI_Leica_SP5_5Channel

Our new SP5 is similar to the current multiphoton SP5 however it has 5 channels + 1 transmitted light channel, and a motorised X/Y stage. It will be fitted with a temperature/CO2 incubator for live cell work soon.

Olympus Cell^R

Expected soon

Calcium Calendar Name: MMI_Olympus_CellR

The Cell R will be our new live-cell system. It features fast, multi fluorescence 3D time-lapse imaging and a novel graphical experiment interface.  It will have an atmospheric chamber (temp and co2) for live cell work.

FV1000 Start Up Sequence

The FV1000 on occasion has problems during start-up. If this occurs please see a staff member to assist you. If you are using the system outside office hours please refer to the following.

  1. Press reset on the computer, and if this doesn’t work hold down the power button for a few seconds until it turns off. Press the power button again and it will start.
  2. Pull out the network cable from the wall. Hold down the computer power button until the computer switches off. Turn the computer on. If it freezes again during initialisation, turn off the computer again and also turn off the microscope controller (Box #4) and the scanning electronics (Box #3). Wait 10 seconds then turn on #4 and #3 then the computer. This will un-jam the system.

Leica Argon Microscope

All attempts to repair this piece of equipment have been unsuccessful so it has been decommissioned. It may at some point be converted into a widefield fluorescent microscope. For the near future it will be unusable.

Ultraview Microscope

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE ULTRAVIEW IS NOW AVAILABLE FOR BOOKINGS!!

The laser on the Ultraview has been changed over and is ready to use.  The new laser adds a 633nm laser line so far red imaging will be available.  If you notice any abnormalities or significant changes in your imaging, please see a staff member.
